The Hodgdon
Way

At Hodgdon, our foundation is built on a clear purpose and the principles that guide every decision we make. These statements reflect not only what we do, but why we do it—and the responsibility we carry as a family-owned business. Together, our mission, philosophy, and values define the standard we uphold for our employees, our customers, and the shooting community we serve.

Our mission statement

Hodgdon Powder Company operates following Bibical principles to honor God. Our mission is to provide quality products and services in a manner which enhances the lives of our employees, families, customers, suppliers, and our communities. In doing so, we will deal with integrity and honesty, reflecting that people are more important than dollars and that our purpose is to bring credit to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Philosophy & Values

Our values are shared among us and they break the boundaries of our organizational chart. We extend our values to all with whom we do business.

We are committed to:

Our Story

  • “We use what we sell.” Many of us are expert shooters and hunters who enjoy the sports we serve. We exemplify the ethical, safe, and competitive nature of our business
  • We are well known and respected in the industry and have built lifetime friendships among our customers, our vendors and our competitors.
  • Our success comes from years of practical management of the business. We remember when goats (who became pets) were kept to keep down weeds on the property. The goat is a symbol of our practicality and our ingenuity.
  • The business was successful and continues to flourish because no one says, “Not my job.”

Our People

  • Integrity & Respect – We treat each other with integrity and respect, the way we would like to be treated. We have the right for our problems to be heard and resolved in a timely fashion.
  • Courage – Valor allows us to address someone who is not sharing our values or with whom we have a disagreement.
  • Safety – Safety is inherent in our business. We value the safety of our co-workers. We have and will continue to strive to achieve the highest standard of safety.
  • Growth – Corporate success demands personal success. We recognize the need to learn, grow, and embrace change together. Our success is dependent on the success of our coworkers.
  • Family – our policies reflect the importance of family.

Quality of Work Life

  • Informal and Hardworking – We have a comfortable but productive work setting
  • Lack of Bureaucracy – Because we treat each other with integrity and respect we do no t need a complex set of rules and regulations.
  • Politics – Politics are discouraged. We speak casually and openly with our co-workers regardless of our placement on the organization chart. We are determined in our efforts to be successful and live our values. We know it is not always comfortable to do and say the right thing, and it takes courage to overcome our discomfort.

The Long Run

  •  Profitability and Wise Use of Resources – We were here yesterday. We are here today. We will be here tomorrow. We are in business to make a fair profit, provide jobs, and to give back to our community.
  • Accountability – Each of us is accountable for how we carry out our jobs day-to-day, including quality and quantity. We hold others accountable for their commitments. All employees are mindful of their responsibility to manage expenses through appropriate use of company accounts, supplies, equipment and other property.
  • Productivity – We are productive self-starters. We do what needs to be done without regard to job description. We take pride in being part of an efficient, productive team.
  • Teamwork – We work together as a team, sharing ideas and helping each other.

Being driven by customer need

  • Quality – Our products and processes meet and often exceed the standards required to attract and keep great customers.
  • Innovation – We encourage new and innovative ways of thinking and dealing with our business, our products and our processes.
  • Customers – The end users (muzzleloaders and handloaders) are our most important customers. The health of our distribution chain depends on them.

We recognize that we are fallible and we may not always display our shared values with our co-workers. We encourage courteous reminders from our fellow workers and recognize that an apology and a commitment to keep our shared values in mind will go a long way to accomplish the sincere commitments in these statements.
